Course Information
This class introduces students to an interdisciplinary examination of differences/similarities in women's lives in the Muslim/Arab world, including the diaspora, and among minorities in the Middle East/Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA). Analysis includes diversity, colonization, nationalism, religion, gender, sexuality, family, law, literature, music, art and film.|For more details you can refer to the Course Outline of Record.
Course is UC and CSU transferable, fulfills GE requirements in areas D (social and behavioral sciences), E (humanities), and H (women's and gender studies), is available for honors credit, and satisfies requirements for the certificate in Critical Middle East (SWANA) Studies, AA in WGST, and AA-T in Social Justice Studies.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
Explain the impact of religious and cultural gender norms in relation to women’s lives in the Middle East
Assess the diversity of Middle Eastern Women’s experience in relation to social, historical, and geographic context.
Evaluate Western perspectives on Middle Eastern women historically and currently.
Compare political and social movements in the region as relates to gender issues over time using social science methodologies.
Analyze contributions that Middle Eastern women have made in artistic, and intellectual production.
