This course introduces students to the peoples, cultures, and places that make up Southwest Asia and North Africa (Middle East) and diaspora. We will analyze social, political, economic, movement, and artistic historic and current events through the lens of cultural production. Please review the syllabus and course policies pages thoroughly before beginning the course. For more details you can refer to the Course Outline of Record.
Course is UC and CSU transferable, fulfills GE requirements in areas D (social and behavioral sciences), E (humanities), and H (ethnic studies), is available for honors credit, and satisfies requirements for the certificate in Critical Middle East (SWANA) Studies.
Examine the diverse identities of people of the Middle East in their geographic, historical, and political context.
Assess power dynamics and challenge stereotypes related to the Middle East.
Apply methods of inquiry from the social sciences and humanities to critique Orientalism and explore alternatives.
Analyze activist, feminist, and aesthetic movements in the Middle East, including their major creative expressions.
Explain the importance of major cultural, artistic, and intellectual contributions from the Middle East and the diaspora.
