GEOG 111: GIS Analysis and Modeling
Course Information
Foundational course of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software. GIS database design, data collection, sophisticated analysis, 3D modeling, production of professional maps. Hands-on training using industry-standard GIS software by Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI). Introduces Global Positioning Systems (GPS) as they relate to GIS.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Locate and utilize GIS data from online resources.
Formulate algorithms for spatial analysis, 3D-modeling, terrain modeling, and data editing.
Identify and implement procedures for data collection using remote sensing or GPS.
The listed prerequisite for GEOG 111 is a passing grade in CCSF GEOG 110, or concurrent enrollment in CCSF GEOG 110.
If you want to review the GEOG 110 content, to know what GEOG 111 builds upon, have a look at the Basic GIS Skills Review.
If you are a student interested in taking GEOG 110 and GEOG 111 concurrently, the system will simply let you enroll in both of them, but we strongly recommend you first review the Windows computer skills self-assessment questions. You should be very comfortable with all the material on this assessment. Students who have less experience with Windows file management often do not have an enjoyable experience taking two GIS classes in one semester. They find more satisfaction taking GEOG 110 in one semester, getting some experience with all the file management, and then taking GEOG 111 or GEOG 112 the following semester.
Students who wish to waive 110 completely, due to some previous GIS experience, should have a look at the Basic GIS Skills Review and then consult Ian Duncan, Program Coordinator/Department Chair, by email, rduncan@ccsf.edu.

Add Policy
Typically students can be added to this class by the instructor until 11:59pm of the Friday of the second week of class. After this time, too much of the class has passed to catch up effectively.
To request to be added, email the instructor at eproctor@ccsf.edu.
Drop Policy
If you do not engage in the first week of class and complete the first module by the due date, without communicating in advance with me, you will be considered a "no-show" and will be dropped from the course without notice.
As the semester goes along, if you have not completed/submitted any work for more than one week, without communicating in advance with me, I will send you a check-in message via Canvas. If I don't get a response to my Canvas message, you will be dropped from the course.
Note that communication is key! There is a lot of flexibility in this class and I know life has a way of making things complicated. I treat my classes like we are all work colleagues, and my expectation is that we all will treat each other like professional adults with interesting and complicated lives outside this class. Things happen, and adjustments can always be made if you keep communication open.
