A primer course for GIS technology. History, structure, uses, and current trends of GIS, related fundamental concepts, basic query, and cartography operations using industry-standard ESRI's ArcGIS software.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Describe and utilize basic GIS software and geographic data in both vector and raster formats.
Identify and evaluate appropriate geographic data, metadata, and sources.
Prepare and apply basic GIS techniques of spatial analysis, editing, geocoding, and geoprocessing.
Develop and create informative, clear, and cartographically correct maps.
There is no listed prerequisite for this class, however, taking any GIS class requires basic computer literacy. Specifically, experience and a comfort level with the Windows operating system and file management (not Mac, and not Chromebook). The goal of this assessment is to help you be certain that you have mastered the skills that are needed to be successful in this course!
Review the Windows computer skills self-assessment questions and answer them for yourself. If you are unable to complete the tasks on this self-assessment list with confidence, obtain help from a friend or an online source until you are comfortable completing them without guidance. You might consider having a help resource identified for yourself for the duration of the semester. No Windows PC training will be provided as part of the GEOG 110 class.

You will be provided with all of the reading materials needed for this class, either inside Canvas or online.
The only way to be added to the class without being enrolled is an invitation from the instructor to put in an Add Request.
To petition for an Add Request approval, email the instructor at eproctor@ccsf.edu for instructions.
All Add Requests that are submitted without approval from the instructor are automatically rejected.
Typically students can be added to this class by the instructor until 11:59pm of the Friday of the second week of class. After this deadline, too much of the class has passed to catch up effectively, and no students will be added.
If you do not engage in the first week of class and complete the first module by the due date, without communicating in advance with me, you will be considered a "no-show" and will be dropped from the course without notice.
As the semester goes along, if you have not completed/submitted any work for more than one week, without communicating in advance with me, I will send you a check-in message via Canvas. If I don't get a response to my Canvas message, you will be dropped from the course.
Note that communication is key! There is a lot of flexibility in this class and I know life has a way of making things complicated. I treat my classes like we are all work colleagues, and my expectation is that we all will treat each other like professional adults with interesting and complicated lives outside this class. Things happen, and adjustments can always be made if you keep communication open.
