ESL 67: Practice in interpreting documents, professional and academic applications and other written instructions, and composing a variety of writings, including those required to apply for admissions, scholarships, internships and employment opportunities, to take advantage of opportunities and funding, and to problem solve and engage effectively in civic life.
As a fully remote class, we will meet two night a week for Livestream sessions. Punctual attendance in these sessions is required.
You will be taking notes, participating in whole class discussions and working in break-out rooms during our Livestreams.
The are no required books for this course !
At the end of the 8-week course, you will design a digital portfolio to demonstrate mastery of everything you have learned and present a Commencement Speech, incorporating all of our strategies for practical writing.
There are no CLAD requirements for this class.
Compose a wide range of written texts, appropriate to the intended audience, in order to advance academically, professionally, and personally.
Use a range of reading strategies to interpret texts and written directions to complete a variety of professional and academic tasks.
Use a range of strategies for identifying and correcting advanced ESL errors.
Ideally, you should have access to a laptop or desktop computer to complete this course. However, I have taken care to design a course that can also be completed from a smartphone. If you intend to complete this course on a phone, please let me know and inform me if there are any problems that arise. Your feedback will help me improve our learning environment to support more students.
You will record videos for this course on various platforms. To do this, you will need either a microphone or webcam connected to your computer or you may record using a smartphone.
You will use Canvas, which is accessed through your MyCCSF account for this course. You won't need to create and account or download anything unless you are using a phone as your course access method.
I strongly recommend that you download the free Canvas Student App before course starts you can stay more connected with our course. When prompted to find your school, enter CCSF and then select our ESL 87 course from your Dashboard.
Throughout the course I will introduce other tools to support your learning, such as Flipgrid, Padlet, JamBoard, Google Slides, and Adobe Creative Cloud. You will be able to access these apps directly from our Canvas course. I'll tell you more before we use them and I will provide plenty of support so that you will be successful using these tools.
