About Our Class
In this class we'll do some review of basic grammar points and investigate more complex grammatical constructions. We'll be using an interesting textbook, Passages Student Book 2, and I hope you buy a copy because we'll use it in all our Zoom classes and in our Canvas assignments.
In addition to our student book materials, we'll read and write about current events from newspaper articles and other sources. We'll also listen to and write about some wonderful songs.
During our Zoom classes, you will have opportunities to practice speaking and listening with your classmates. You'll also get a social media experience through Canvas Discussion assignments. You'll contribute your thoughts about different topics in written and recorded comments.

Please get the textbook that we use in our class, English in Action 4, 3rd Edition
Noncredit students at City College are not required to buy the book. However, it is highly recommended! I recommend that you obtain a book because:
- We will use our book in every live Zoom class meeting
- Many of the assignments come directly from our book.
- The book will help you learn more quickly and completely.
Where to obtain your book
- You are welcome to buy the book from the City College of San Francisco Bookstore.
- It's also okay to get the book online or at your local bookstore. This is America, and the consumer is king! However, if you buy a book online, make sure that it is the correct version.
- It's perfectly fine to buy a used book.They are cheaper and are almost always in very good condition.
ESL Intermediate High Certificates
You can combine our course, ESL 9, with another high-level course, to get a Low Advanced ESL Noncredit Certificate of Competency. This certificate can be helpful for a job search, especially on your resumé. It would also look good in a picture frame on your wall!
