This is the pathway for students who need to take MATH 80 - Probability and Statistics to satisfy the math requirement for their major. This is typically students who want to major in anthropology, political science, psychology, sociology, and other social sciences.
Students who might want to major in physical sciences should consider the STEM Pathway, which is more widely accepted among various majors.
It is extremely important to make sure that the transfer-level math class you choose to take will satisfy the transfer requirements designated by your choice of major and transfer institution. This information can be found on ASSIST.org, but that website can be difficult to navigate, so it’s best to discuss this with a counselor. There are some majors that require a Statistics courses AND a Calculus course, so always double check your major requirements.
Please turn on your audio and click Play on the audio file below (or click here) to learn more about our Statistics Pathway, including the recent changes in placement. You can also see our flowchart of courses and placement information below:
Here is a flowchart of the courses in our Statistics Pathway, along with placement rules and recommendations. Courses in green are open to everybody, and courses in yellow are open to students with a HS GPA of at least 2.3 (or who have satisfied the prerequisites). Courses in solid boxes are transfer-level courses, and courses in dashed boxes are developmental courses:
Also note that some students may satisfy their statistics requirement by taking PSYC 5 - Psych Statistics, ECON 5 - Introductory Statistics, or LALS 5 - Introduction to Statistical Methods in Latin American and Latino/a Studies. As these courses are in separate departments, they may have separate placement rules. However, all students who have passed MATH 45 or MATH 60 are eligible for PSYC 5, ECON 5, and LALS 5.
All students who have questions regarding which math class to take are encouraged to speak with their current math instructor (if they have one), the Math Advising Coordinator, or a counselor so that they can make an informed decision.
