Why have the placement rules changed?
In October 2017 the state passed a new law called AB 705 that requires community college to move toward using a student's high school performance as the primary instrument in determining a student's placement in mathematics and English classes, as well as maximizing the probability that students complete transfer-level math courses within a one-year time frame.
What about the placement test?
We are phasing out the placement tests, as we will no longer be allowed to use them under AB 705. For Spring 2019 we are recommending the College Level Math placement test as an option for students to place into MATH 110A - Calculus I.
Will City College continue to offer MATH 30 - Prealgebra with Basic Math and MATH 40 - Elementary Algebra?
We are still offering a few sections of MATH 30 - Prealgebra with Basic Math and MATH 40 - Elementary Algebra; however, no student will be required to take these classes unless they are needed to fulfill a particular requirement for another program.
Can I continue along the course sequence currently in my Education Plan?
The new placement rules provide students with more options and shorter sequences to reach transfer-level math classes; however, students may enroll in any class that they are eligible for.
Will the math department be offering corequisite support courses for other transfer-level courses, such as MATH 70 or MATH 75.
We are currently creating support courses for MATH 80 - Probability and Statistics and MATH 90 - Precalculus Algebra because these are our highest-enrolled transfer-level courses. We may consider creating more corequisite support courses in the future if there is demand, but these are by far our highest priorities.
