Welcome to BIO 12

Plant Biology

Spring 2024

Welcome to BIO 12 (Plant Biology)

During this 17-week course,  we will explore the universe of plants, from the cellular to the global scale.  I am excited to work with you as you learn about the structure, function, evolution, and ecology of plants.  Topics will include reproduction and development of seed and non-seed plants, levels of organization, metabolism, form and function, and survey of major taxa. The biology and ecology of fungi and photosynthetic protists will also be included.

This course is a hybrid class where lectures are delivered online and labs meet in-person on the Ocean Campus.  The laboratory exercises are coordinated with lecture topics and may include field exercises.  Please read this WELCOME LETTER to make sure that this is the right course for you!

General Course Overview

Bio 12 is a hybrid course with online lectures and weekly, on-campus laboratory meetings every Wednesday from 2:10-5:00 pm in S322. We will also go on several field trips to see plant in action! You can check my office hours via the CANVAS calendar.

During the 1st week, we will meet on campus in S322 and will review the course details and get an introduction to the lab component of the class. This first meeting provides the chance to review the materials and to answer any questions you might have.  For those on the waitlist or wanting to get into the class, it will be even more important for you to join, as I will note your presence and give you priority if space does open up in the class. SO, please plan on joining on Wednesday, January 17th!

Please note that anyone who does NOT participate in the “Meet Your Clasmatesassignment by Thursday 1/25 at 11:59 pm will be considered a NO SHOW and will be dropped so that I can add others who are interested in the course.  As such, if you are looking to add (whether on the wait list or not), plan on attending the first lab meeting on January 17th! Email me for details.

You will be required to take exams at a specific date/time.  Please see the list of exam dates in the course syllabus.

BIO 12 is a 4-unit course that fulfills the Area C, Natural Science CCSF requirement and meets requirements for transfer to CSU and UC.

For more information, please read the BIO 12 Course Syllabus Spring 2024 and the list of topics covered in the BIO 12 Course Schedule Spring 2024.
