Fall 2024

Welcome to BIO 100b (General Biology)

During this 16-week course,  we will explore biology from an evolutionary perspective.  Our major themes will be form and function, the role of evolution in the diversification of organisms and the ecological principles that highlight this diversity. This course is Intended for students majoring in the biological sciences, but open to all qualified students who are prepared for the rigorous curriculum (previous course work in biology is highly recommended).

This course is a hybrid class where lectures are delivered online and labs meet in-person on the Ocean Campus.  Please read this WELCOME LETTER to make sure that this is the right course for you!

General Course Overview--Fall 2024

Bio 100b is a hybrid course taught with online lectures and REQUIRED weekly, on-campus laboratory meetings on the Ocean Campus in Science 322, every Tuesday and Thursday (either in the morning from 10:10am-1:00pm for Dr. Traut's lab or the afternoon from 1:10-4:00pm for Dr. Woo's lab). We will be available for office hours every week (times/locations available on the CANVAS calendar).

During the 1st week we will meet in-person at the Ocean Campus in S322 for both of our labs on Thursday.  You are required to attend lab during this first week during your registered lab section (10:10 AM with Dr. Traut or 1:10 PM with Dr. Woo).  Additionally to avoid being dropped, students MUST participate in the “M1: Discussion on Meet Your Classmates" by Friday 9/06 at 11:59am.  If you do NOT, you will be considered a NO SHOW and may be dropped from the course. The activity can be found in the Module 1 under assignments

You will be required to take exams in-person at a specific date/time.  Please see the list of exam dates in the course syllabus.

If you are looking to add (whether on the waitlist or not), email your lab instructor. For those on the waitlist or wanting to get into the class, it will be even more important for you to join the September 3 lab meeting, as we will note your presence and give you priority if space does open up in the class. You should also submit a Class Add Request. Any spots will be approved on Saturday, September 7.

BIO 100b is a 5-unit course that fulfills the Area C, Natural Science CCSF requirement and meets requirements for transfer to CSU and UC.
