Course Description
This is a SHORT TERM 7-week course offered completely online. Information competency skills help students be more effective consumers and creators of information. This course helps students develop awareness and resilience for life, work, & study in a society overloaded with information. Disinformation, algorithmic bias, Web search strategies, fact-checking, privacy, plagiarism, & information ethics are covered. Techniques include using online library databases, identifying information types, and citing & selecting credible and relevant scholarly sources.
Learning Outcome
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Distinguish between information sources and their value in different contexts.
Formulate viable research questions.
Employ effective search strategies across a variety of search tools.
Apply evaluation criteria to information sources.
Practice ethical and legal use of information.

Orientation
A welcome video on the course homepage is accessible for the first two weeks of class and it will guide you through an orientation to the Course and using Canvas. An optional synchronous Zoom meeting will be scheduled twice during the first week of class to orient students to the class as well. The times will be scheduled and accessible through the ConferZoom link on the left navigation menu in the course.

Visit the CCSF Canvas Student Support Center to watch video tutorials from Canvas that will help you set up your notification preferences, use the Canvas Student app, navigate the dashboard, and access and submit your assignments.
If you want to travel deeper into the world of Canvas, you can enroll in Passport to Canvas which will give you an in-depth orientation in using Canvas as a student.
In the Canvas Student Support center, learn how to get live Canvas support and how to use conferencing applications like Zoom and Pronto so that you can join live class sessions and meet with your instructor during office hours.
