This year, we will shift towards a Choice Based Classroom, starting with the Ceramic courses. This new learning model will tremendously benefit students in developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and ownership of their learning. They will be making art with their ideas, choosing which skills and techniques they want to learn and incorporate into their work. Students will continue to reflect on their artwork at the end of each project, writing or video recording their artist statements. This new framework will focus more on the students understanding and implementing their process from the ideation stage to the final product. This new teaching model is aligned with the New Jersey Visual Arts Standards and the curriculum of Madison Public Schools.
Students will be introduced to these skills and techniques through stations. The stations are color-coded and labeled. Below is the map of the stations and the timeline of their introduction. I outlined the demonstrations, mini-lessons, and boot camps associated with each station. Students will record their process using the Daily Student Tracking Sheet. Each student is responsible for tracking their daily progress. The student writes their name, course, period, and student number. They are instructed to fill out the sheet to the best of their ability at the end of each period. This will help the student keep track of their station and what they want to go to during the next class. Students must also take an in-progress photo and add it to this Google Docs form. In addition to filling out this tracking form, students will record notes during demonstrations, mini-lessons, and boot camps. Students will write down their daily objectives and what they want to complete during the next class period.
