In 7th Grade Social Studies, we will start our year by learning about how we study geography and history. Next, we focus on our earliest hominin ancestors and human evolution during the Old Stone Age and New Stone Age through the Agricultural Revolution when humankind changed forever. Our next unit examines the Ancient River Valley civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt. We will look at the rise of towns and cities and eventually the development of civilization and empire. These units examine cultures, mythologies, beliefs, governments, legal systems and technological advancement that still influence our world today. Our final unit will focus on Classical Western Civilizations. The Greek unit focuses on the the foundations of Western democracy, philosophy, science, and medicine. We learn about the causes and effects of the Trojan, Persian and Peloponnesian Wars. The end of the year wraps up with the fall of the Roman monarchy and the creation of the Roman Republic, the expansion and collapse of the Roman Empire, and the incredible legacy of ancient Rome that we have built upon today. Throughout our year, we will look at the impact of geography and resources on human civilization, and the influence of ancient ideas and inventions on the modern world. We will also learn about how to evaluate resources of information for veracity as well as how to express our ideas both in writing and while speaking publicly.
