MTA 5th Grade

2018-2019

Welcome to the beginning of another great school year! We are so glad you are here! We hope to make this a wonderful and successful school year for all learners! We believe the school atmosphere should be a safe and pleasant one and should focus on academic excellence. School is also a place to nurture friendships and develop compassion for others. Children, furthermore, need to develop positive feelings about themselves and the learning process through experiencing success. This page will outline some of the important things you need to know about this year and your classes.

During the week there will be homework in various forms (reading, math, writing, etc.) We expect all homework to be turned in on-time; any late homework may be turned in the next day for half credit. There are times when emergencies come up at home and homework is not completed. Please have a note or an e-mail from a parent explaining the situation and we will accept the assignment one day late. We can handle these situations one at a time on an individual basis.

In addition, we expect a proper heading and your work needs to be neat and organized. The heading of your paper needs to be your first and last name, date, period and assignment all at the top RIGHT of your paper.

If you are absent check the absent bin to find the assignments we worked on while you were out. You have as many days as you were absent to make up the work and receive credit (with the exception of long term projects)

5th Grade Classroom Expectations

The 5th grade team has developed a system in accordance with the school-wide discipline plan to keep parents informed of their child’s behavior and homework. Each student will be given a planner at the start of the school year.

What are we asking of students?

  • Have their planner with them every day, in every class.
  • Use the planner to record homework and important information.
  • Show the planner to parents/guardians each night and planners need to be signed.

What are we asking of parents?

  • Please look at your child’s planner each night, checking for homework assignments and any behavior issues.
  • Write any notes in the planner, or contact teachers by phone or email, with any questions or concerns.
  • Be aware of what a green dot means and any challenges your child may be facing.

What does misconduct mean?

Any action by a student that disrupts a classroom setting or violates school campus procedures is deemed inappropriate behavior. Student misconduct includes excessive talking, gum chewing, seating issues, horseplay, dress code violations, improper computer use, and any form of classwork cheating including plagiarizing. Such actions do not reflect the rules or character values promoted by the school.

What does the green dot mean?

  • The green dot means that your child did not complete their homework, or has missing work.
  • The student will be required to record what assignment they are missing.

Teachers need to be patient, understanding and willing to accommodate our students’ needs. Every student learns at a different pace. Therefore, we must be flexible, prepared and organized to meet everyone’s needs. Most of all, we need to create an atmosphere that is exciting, positive, and educational for all students. We promise to work very hard to make all of this happen along with your support. On that note, we believe that it is important for parents to be aware and directly involved in their child’s academic progress. It is helpful if homework is monitored and checked daily to ensure student development. Their planners are being used to record behavior, positive acknowledgments and homework that way you can see what work needs to be done.
