Literacy Act information

In 2019, the Alabama Literacy Act was signed into law by the Alabama legislature. The purpose of the Alabama Literacy Act was “to implement steps to improve the reading proficiency of public school kindergarten to third grade students and ensure that those students are able to read at or above grade level by the end of the third grade.” The law states that all third-grade students shall demonstrate sufficient reading skills for promotion to fourth grade The law does include a few “good cause” exemptions for guiding retention decisions. A parent or legal guardian of any kindergarten – third grade student who exhibits a consistent reading deficiency and/or characteristics of dyslexia at any time during a given school year will be notified in writing of the consistent reading deficiency. Additional information will follow the notification to include reading interventions that will be utilized by school personnel and strategies and resources that can be used at home to assist the student’s reading progress.
