The Kentucky Academic Standards contain the minimum required standards that all Kentucky students should have the opportunity to learn before graduating from Kentucky high schools. The standards address what is to be learned, but do not address how learning experiences are to be designed or what resources should be used. The Kentucky Academic Standards and standards resources can be found on KYstandards.org (linked above). KYstandards.org links all of the states academic standards and corresponding resources.
By analyzing and breaking down academic standards, educators can better align their teaching strategies with the intended goals, ensuring effective and meaningful learning experiences for students. Deconstructing academic standards empowers teachers to become more effective educators by providing them with a solid foundation upon which to build their instructional plans. It ensures that teaching is purposeful, aligned, and responsive to the diverse needs of students, ultimately enhancing the overall quality of education.
This template systematically walks through the important components of standards deconstruction by asking educators to analyze the goals of the standard, the rigor of the standard, where the standard falls in the progression, and how students can demonstrate mastery of the standard. This tool is designed to be used in either group or individual settings.
Deconstructing academic standards helps educators gain clarity about the specific learning objectives that students are expected to achieve. Understanding the intended outcomes allows educators to set clear and measurable goals for their instruction, ensuring that students know what they are expected to learn.
Once clarity is built around the standard, clarity has to be communicated to our students. This template is a generic clarity plan that can help educators think around the important components to building clear instruction.
