Workshop Description: In 2020, Wisconsin had the highest Black female homicide victimization rate in the United States. Representative Shelia Stubbs will be presenting on her legislation to create a Missing and Murdered African American Women and Girls Task Force in our state to address these disparities, reduce gender-based violence, and provide resources to victims and their families. Rep. Stubbs will discuss the history of the bill, what it does, its impact on the community, and the journey it's taken so far in the State Legislature.

Speaker Bio: Representative Shelia Stubbs serves as the Wisconsin State Representative for the 78th Assembly District, which includes parts of South and East Madison, the City of Monona, part of the Village of McFarland, and the Town of Blooming Grove. Representative Stubbs was first elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 2018. She was the first African American Representative to be elected to a Dane County seat, shattering 170 years of history. Representative Stubbs received a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Tougaloo College, a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Management from Mount Senario College, and a Master’s Degree in Management from Cardinal Stritch University. She is a Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, Madison Alumnae Chapter. Representative Shelia Stubbs is married to Bishop Dr. Godfrey Stubbs, the Senior Pastor at End Times Ministries, International where she also serves as a pastor. They have been blessed with 6 children and 6 grandchildren.
Currently Representative Stubbs serves as the ranking Democratic member on the Assembly Committee on Corrections. She also serves on the Assembly Committee on Energy and Utilities, Assembly Committee on Health, Aging and Long Term Care. She has previously served as the Co-Chair of the Assembly Speaker’s Task Force on Racial Disparities and as the Former Chair of the Wisconsin Legislative Black Caucus.
Prior to serving in the Assembly, Representative Stubbs served on the Dane County Board of Supervisors and worked as a probation and parole agent, a special education teacher, and an adjunct professor in the Criminal Justice program at Mount Senario College. Representative Stubbs is passionate about criminal justice, education, and equity work, all of which are reflected in her public policy. She has received numerous awards, including the 2022 International Interior Design Association: Wisconsin Chapter Government Affairs Award, 2023 Boys and Girls Club of Dane County Champion for Children Award, 2023-24 Conservation Champion Award and 2024 Wisconsin Counties Association Outstanding Legislator Award.

Speaker Bio: Senator Kelda Helen Roys is an attorney, entrepreneur, small business owner, and former nonprofit executive. She represents Wisconsin’s 26th Senate District, which includes most of Madison and several surrounding communities. Sen. Roys is entering her second term in the State Senate, where she will continue to fight for reproductive freedom, economic opportunity, and great public education for every child in Wisconsin.
Workshop Description: We will discuss how the federal income tax system works and the specific rules that benefit people with different income & wealth profiles. If time permits, we may discuss or debate proposed changes or alternatives to current tax laws and common tax tricks and traps.

Speaker Bio: Chris Anderle is a Tax Attorney and Director of the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic.
Workshop Description: A brief history of WI Books to Prisoners and how the project operates will be presented as well as an overview of the economic lives of prisoners and the current threats in WI to their right to read books of their own choosing. Students will be encouraged to read letters from prisoners requesting books, take an illustrated quiz on incarceration in America, and engage in a discussion about prison abolition and indigenous/alternative systems of justice.

Speaker Bio: Camy Matthay co-founded Wisconsin Books to Prisoners in 2006 after volunteering for a number of years co-sponsoring a documentary film and discussion group at a prison in Wisconsin. She makes instructional zines for prisoners nationwide on popular topics such as learning to draw, chess, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and reentry resources.
