This article gives the background to, and explains, a historical moment where nine African-American Students enrolled in an all white high school, in an effort to end segregation. The article focuses on the photo which shows Elizabeth Eckford’s solo arrival. (Her family did not have a telephone; therefore, she was unaware of a plan for all nine to arrive together.) The text speaks strongly of one individual alone against a crowd of hostile and screaming adults and students. The article also goes further to check back in with Eckford and the white student, Hazel Bryan seen behind Eckford shouting.

Malala Yousafzai is a young woman who has won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 for her work in the women’s rights movement in Pakistan, against the influence of the Taliban. In 2012, Malala was shot in the head by a gunman, involved with the Taliban, in an effort to silence her by her death. Malala survived the assassination attempt and doubled her efforts gain equality for girls in the Middle East. Malala Yousafzai has written a book titled, I am Malala.
