In order to be successful in English 3, you will prepare and complete two portfolios. A portfolio is essentially a place to showcase and reflect on your final work. In order to get to your final work, you will need to process through multiple drafts. This is the work we will do throughout the semester. The portfolios include processed essays, we will bring those essays through multiple drafts and workshops. We will begin by focusing on the analysis of argumentation and we will use the Toulmin method to look at arguments. Therefore, the first portfolio will include essays where you analyze other’s writing. In the second half of the semester, we will begin developing an argument on a topic of your choice through research and discussion. The focus in this class is on relevant topics and arguments. You will need the critical reading skill you have developed throughout high school in order to advance your critical thinking. My philosophy for this class is that my job is to help you become curious and question your thoughts and opinions on the subjects that people are openly talking about today. I want you to leave English 3 feeling like you have the ability to reflect and have a voice on the relevant issues of our time.
