During the life-history interviews, we asked Ukrainian newcomer participants to identify any significant events from before Russia's full-scale 2022 invasion until the day of the interview. They were asked to identify and then describe these points on their own personal timeline. We then coallated these experiences into the timeline shown below.
Schensul and LeCompte (2013) advocate for the use of community timelines as an excellent tool for community members to reflect on their collective experience and build opportunities for interaction and connection among groups of respondents.
A large copy of this timeline was printed and placed in the John L. Haar Library during MacEwan’s second Ukraine Week (September 30 – October 4th). Our goal in displaying this large poster is twofold: (1) to disseminate our research results using an innovative method, and (2) to entice students, staff, and faulty to share their own experiences of resettlement and/or integration here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (or elsewhere).
Ukrainian Delegates Visit the Timeline (October 4, 2024)
In front of this timeline, we had the following set of isntructions asking for passersby to engage with the timeline by writing down their own experiences on larger sticky notes. They would then add them to the white board on display.
