In the summer of 2024, Budianska and I also hosted a series of photovoice workshops with Ukrainian Newcomers (N = 8). Photovoice methodology is a qualitative research method where participants use photos and photography to explore a relevant theme.
Why this approach?
This kind of research has been shown to develop healing and capacity-building when conducting research with newcomers (Schulman, Kraemer, & Baratta, 2019), and as such, aligns with our community-engaged approach. For example, Budig et al. (2019) argue that this approach affords participants new knowledge and critical awareness of their community, it enhanced participants’ self-perception, and built participants’ social networks (p. 1).
What was the outcome?
Budianska and Dr. Long spent July and August 2024 crafting a Photovoice Book. Digital and physcial copies of this book were shared with participants and our community partner in 2024. Plans are in the works to have a physical copy of this book available to the MacEwan community through the Library.
