Inclusive Dining

Provide and maintain a variety of dining options including vegan, vegetarian, halal, and gluten free.

Sustainable Dining Supply Procurement

Choose a responsible option for disposable dining supplies (i.e. biodegradable).

Vending Machine Program

Investigate and consider reducing the number of vending machines or repurposing them.

Healthy Food Choices

Provide healthy and affordable food choices on campus to promote wellness.

Cooking Classes

Provide accessible and practical cooking classes for students, focusing on healthy, local, and affordable choices.

Discount Programs

Deliver discount programs where staff, students, and faculty receive discounts on food and drinks for making sustainable choices.

Food Recovery

Develop and implement a food recovery program where excess food can be donated.

On-Campus Franchises

Work with on-campus franchises and our food service provider to include sustainability into campus wide practices.

Create a policy that commits to local, sustainable food being purchased.

Support innovative pilot programs that increase food security at MacEwan (OP 8.2).

Create a number of innovative pilot programs, with the opportunity for expansion, that support food security at MacEwan.

Develop a food security fund to fund new pilot projects from revenue generated from existing food security projects.

Build on the success of pilot projects by scaling the projects up where economically feasible.

Identify and strive to reduce ongoing requirements for paper and printers through maintaining digital records.

Print Services Delivery

Eliminate the default use of shrink wrap for print orders.

Tablets for Loan

Provide tablets on loan through the library.

Electronic Refurbishment Program

Support the refurbishment and resale of gently used campus electronics.

Department Specific Paper Reduction Strategies

Utilize lessons learned from pilot to co-design and implement paper reduction programs for highest use departments.

Online and Digital Books

Encourage faculty to choose digital, Open Educational Resources (OERs), and paper-free options for student readings including digital textbooks and online articles.

Mobile Computing

Standardize laptop computers to improve staff and faculty and reducing the need for paper.

One Card Program

Work with Campus Services to support the implementation of a One Card program for staff, students, and faculty.

Purchasing & Asset Management

Support socially equitable and environmentally responsible businesses through procurement and asset management (OP 10.1).

Sustainable Paper Purchasing

Develop a procedure that commits that the University will utilize sustainably sourced paper.

Electronics Purchasing and Disposal

Develop purchasing practice that ensures the purchase environmentally preferable, EPEAT registered electronics, and ensure they are responsibly refurbished, recycled, or disposed of.

Energy Star Certified

Develop and publish standards for purchasing that ensure appliances, food service equipment, lighting, and other equipment is energy star certified, or a recognized equivalent.

Sustainable Purchasing Principles

Develop guiding principles to help the campus community make informed and sustainable purchasing decisions.

Local and Inclusive Purchasing

Investigate giving preference to local products and businesses.

Tendering

Include sustainability criteria in the tendering process, including evaluation criteria where applicable. Revisit contracts when they are up for renewal to include sustainability additions.

Procurement Checklist

Develop and utilize a checklist for departmental purchasing to ensure proper procedure and requirements are met (i.e. check with facilities to ensure proper infrastructure is in place for new purchase).

Supplier Engagement

Actively engage with university suppliers to advocate for more sustainable practices, including waste and transportation.

Surplus Assets

Develop a strategy and implement practice to track and donate surplus assets.

Sustainable Procurement Policy

Create a sustainable procurement policy that promotes the choice of environmentally and socially preferable products and services.

Vendor Code of Conduct

Create a vendor code of conduct that all vendors must sign and abide by when working with MacEwan University.

Ensure all custodial services comply with the Green Housekeeping Program (OP 10.2).
