Hi! My name is Schuyler and I'm a Junior at Marin Academy in San Rafael, California. I am lucky enough to be a part of the Marin Academy Collaborative Research and have the brilliant opportunity to pursue my scientific interests. Specifically, I am interested and passionate about neuroscience and a better understanding of how the brain is responsible for so much of the human experience. As a part of the MARC program, I have enjoyed exploring different topics within this field, and I am excited to delve into research surrounding the biological mechanisms of memory formation.
In my free time, I play high school and club water polo year-round. I'm a captain of the Swim and Water Polo teams at Marin Academy and love teaching kids how to swim. I'm a Swim Marin Youth Instructor here at MA, and I also volunteer on the weekends with SOMA Aquatics as an instructor. I'm also a Teen Ambassador and leader of the One Love Club at MA, where we raise awareness about the signs of unhealthy relationships while empowering young people to manage their mental health. Additionally, I'm a Marin Academy Admissions Fellow Leader and the MA Student Body Vice President. I love spending time with my family and dogs and one day hope to be the proud owner of a Bernese Mountain Dog.
Relevant classes: Geometry (H), Algebra II (H), Pre-Calculus (H), Advanced Calculus (H), Advanced Physics with Calculus (H), Data Science & Experimental Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Neuroscience (H).
I took neuroscience at Marin Academy this year because I have always been fascinated by the plasticity of the brain and different neurodegenerative disorders. I began thinking about the natural process of aging and the effects of certain drugs on the brain. My primary area of interest is memory formation, sparked primarily by an interest in dementia, a disorder currently affecting my grandmother. I hope to explore the different biological and mechanical processes behind memory formation.
