September 2026
Senior year is officially underway! It is hard to believe that we are more than half way through our MARC ISR journey. It was great to hear about each person's progress over the summer, and I am happy that we get to spend time as the whole cohort now that the school year has started. While I made significant progress on my project over the summer, there is still lots of work to be done! Right now, I am focusing on validating my tsunami simulation and learning about how the Japan tsunami early warning system functions.
August 2026
I started visiting the lab at Stanford to work on my project on campus! I visited lab meetings and completed work in some office space I have there. I got to learn more about Dr. Biondi's lab: the Wave Sensing Lab in the Stanford Geophysics department . In terms of my project's progress, I began reworking a tsunami simulation code to for the 2011 Tohoku tsunami. The code was originally created by another member of Dr. Biondi's lab and simulated a tsunami in the Mavericks are in California. I have been altering this code to the bathymetry of the Tohoku area, and using the initial condition/wave height of the 2011 event.
July 2026
I've begun making concrete progress on my project! Dr. Biodi and I have decided to focus on the 2011 Tohoku tsunami. What I've been focusing on now in experimental setup is obtaining locational coordinates of submarine cables in the Japan area. I am using a software called QGIS to georeference and then trace the cables, so that their exact coordinates can be downloaded. Attacked below are photos of my progress:

June 2026
We recently had our MARC ISR 1 poster session! Speaking about my research exercised my ability to communicate the ideas of my project to the wider MA community. Attached below is my poster:

I am currently working towards my literature review, which includes identifying and reading through papers related to past tsunamis and the implementation of DAS. We (Dr. Biondi and I) are still deciding on whether to focus on the 2011 Tohoku Tsunami or the 2004 Sumatra Tsunami. To prepare for our research, I am learning python in the meanwhile.
February 2026
I just connected with Dr. Ettore Biondi, who has generously agreed to serve as my mentor for my MARC project! Our project will be about DAS in Tsunami Early Warning.
