FND is a complex and often misunderstood condition. Over the past decade, the amount of research has grown exponentially, but much is still unknown. Defining FND to a specific set of symptoms is difficult and thus FND goes by many names: formerly Conversion Disorder, sometimes Functional Movement Disorder(s) or Functional Motor Disorder(s), and sometimes only symptoms (i.e. non-epileptic seizures) are specified.
