Mobile devices such as tablets were never created to be a shared device. They were created to be a personal 1to1 device that allows an individual to work/learn/play anywhere, anytime. Students with their own device find learning outcomes improve as they can access their learning as the need arises.
With BYOD, students are taking their device, and therefore their learning home with them. This has huge potential benefits of not only continuing and sharing learning at home but using their device to carry out personal and family related learning. As much as we would like to, as a school, we are unable to fund 1to1 devices for students.
Insurance covering the device is the responsibility of parents/caregivers as stated in the BYOD Agreement. Usually devices will be covered under contents insurance but check with your insurer first.
A secure area within the classroom will be provided at school where devices will be kept during breaks. It is the students responsibility to ensure their device is placed in this area.
As learning is a collaborative experience there may be times when your child is required to "share their screen" with other students, however they would remain in control and have responsibility for their device. We would not request your child to lend their device to others, including siblings, however if they choose to do so remain responsible for its care.
Pen and paper will still be used. It is about choosing the right tool for the job, whether that be pen, paper or the device.
We do expect a basic level of understanding (charging, powering on, downloading apps etc) from children and their parents/caregivers. Our teachers are most familiar with the Chromebooks, iPads and MacBooks. It is the responsibility of children and their parents/caregivers to maintain their device.
Yes, yourself, your child and the school will be required to sign an agreement and agree to meet their responsibilities.
This will all be set up by Lyttelton Primary School's technician on your child's device. There will be specific wifi log-in for BYOD devices.
Teachers use Hapara Teacher Dashboard which allows them monitoring access to children's Google accounts on Chromebooks and Laptops when using the Chrome web browser. This allows teachers to easily access student documents to provide feedback and next learning steps. It also, if necessary, allows teachers to view any incoming and outgoing mail to ensure a safe and secure environment. This is a great learning step for children who are new to their own email account.
We recommend Chromebooks, iPads and Macbooks as these are the most compatible with our operating systems. However, if you wish to bring another device, this may possible if it is compatible/suitable. Please discuss this with your child's teacher. We are not allowing smartphones due to the size of the screen and keys which makes it difficult to complete all work required in class.
As stated in the BYOD Agreement, any damages are the responsibility of the child and family. We will be strongly encouraging students to keep their device in the storage area unless they are working on it to avoid other students having contact with it. We also recommend a protective case. If damage to another child's device occurred, teachers would follow a restorative process to resolve the issue.
