Sexism is a prominent issue all over the world, in all different places and situations. It can be difficult and frustrating to deal with and work through. This part of the website will teach about sexism, give tips on how to overcome it, give facts about sexism around the world, and more!
Sexism is defined as prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex. It is also the belief at one sex is better or higher-ranked than another sex. It creates restrictions on what men/boys can and should do and what women/girls can and should do. Sexism's main function is to maintain male domination, through ideas and practices of individuals, groups, and institutions that suppress women and girls because of their sex/gender.
Extreme sexism is called misogyny, the hatred of women. In misogynistic communities there is lots of violence against women, domestically, sexually, and women are objectified for their bodies. In places like this women may also be seen as lower-class citizens or property.
occupational sexism - any form of discrimination against someone because of their sex that happens in their place of work
hostile sexism - this is demeaning and makes women seem inferior to men. They can be regarded as as too manipulative, emotional, or incompetent
benevolent sexism - this shows up more unconsciously and it is the idea that women should be taken care up and men should be providers. Although the general attitude is not one that is meant to be demeaning and could come from a place of care, it is stilling undermining the fact that women should be treated equally
sexual harassment
gender-biased treatment
lower payment based on gender
sexual violence
Sexism is a serious issue and facing it can help to decrease the amount that it happens. Some ways to stop it are;
not validating sexist comments by laughing, laughing is basically saying you are ok with it
letting it pass and not saying anything, challenge the use of the language
ask questions, what did they mean? was it funny? why did they feel the need to refer to the person's gender?
remind them of their better self, maybe they would not have said that in a different setting
know your boundaries, if the sexism topic turns into a debate, know your limits and don't feel guilty for shutting down the conversation
