ENGL 377N: British Drama in London. Professor Bates
Introduction to the scope and range of British drama from the beginnings of its modern form (in the Renaissance) to the present, focused in particular on its performance in the context of London as a capital of world theatre.
ENGL 377X: Travel Writing in London. Professor McGuire
Use writing as a way to explore a place, London. Students learn the city of London while reading texts and writing essays that ask them to view the city from a variety of perspectives. Travel writing has some special feastures that will shape both the content and the work for this subject: reflecting the point of view, narrative choices, and the style of individuals. It also responds to the pressures of a real world only marginally under their control.
*The itinerary may change as the trip is finalized.
This schedule is based on the plays and activities for the 2024 program and will change. The plays will be selected from what is available in London at that time (chosen no later than Feb 15 2026 so they can be part of the British Drama syllabus). Activities will generally be the same but will be scheduled to fit.

The cost of the Study Abroad program consists of three basic items:
The program cost (inclusive of lodging, some meals, all transportation while abroad (including the international airfare), and all entrance/event fees for included attractions) is $5500. (The final program cost could be slightly less depending on the number of students who participate.)
The tuition is paid per credit hour according to the Summer Term rate. Students receive a 50% discount on tuition!
The program cost covers most of your expenses abroad. Typically the following are covered (this may change as the trip is finalized):
✓ Hotel accommodation based on twin and triple rooms with daily breakfast included
✓ Private transportation with an air-conditioned vehicle during the tour
✓ Entrance fees for included attractions and plays during the tour
✓ Some meals included, as indicated
Miscellaneous Expenses The three principal miscellaneous expenses are (1) passport applications (if you do not have a valid passport), (2) visa, and (3) spending money.
Passports Students lacking a valid passport should apply as soon as possible because processing can take months to complete. Instructions are available at the U.S. Department of State website. The cost for a new passport is $165.
Visa
Spending money Everyone will need to bring some spending money to pay for meals uncovered by the program costs, any optional attractions, and souvenirs. How much depends on each person’s spending habits.
The University of Lynchburg currently offers need-based scholarships. The amount awarded is based on the student’s financial need, which is based on a student’s Estimated Financial Contribution on the student’s FAFSA. If a student has not submitted a FAFSA, he or she will not be eligible for these scholarships.
There are a large number of external scholarships available from a wide range of organizations. They are competitive and typically require students to complete an essay. The student may use the same essay for more than one scholarship application. More information can be found here at this link. You may also wish to do your own google search to find other scholarships.
Many types of financial aid that students are receiving to fund their University of Lynchburg education may be used for study abroad/away programs, including loans. We encourage you to make an appointment with the Office of Financial Aid to discuss your individual financial aid options by calling 434-544-8228.
For additional information about scholarships, email Jennifer Wills, Director of Study Abroad.
This trip will involve physical activities, including walking and other physically engaging activities. We average around 20,000 steps per day (which is over 8 miles)! Walking paths are sometimes uneven (brick/stone) and hilly. Steps are also often required.
If you have any physical or mobility issues that might hinder your participation, please notify the program leaders before you apply to the program.
Part of exploring a new culture is trying new and different foods. If you have any food allergies or restrictions, please note that on the application form. Some meals will be pre-planned.
