About the Emergency Management and Global Health Concentration

The EMGH Concentration within the DMSc provides PAs access to didactic and active learning in emergency preparedness and global response to disasters, regardless of clinical or professional background. Our faculty are nationally known experts in disaster preparedness/response, emergency management, military medicine, tactical preparedness, and global health.

The degree program culminates in a seven-10 day intensive, in-person experience, where you will apply the skills you have learned in a real-world situation. The intensive in spring 2025 will be in Dominican Republic.

Service Trip Information

Location: Panama April 27 - May 3, 2025, Panama City & Bocas del Toro

Lodging Address: Isla de Doctores, Valle Escondido, Isla San Cristobal, Boca del Toro, Panama

Areas of Operations: Hospital, Pop-clinics, Wellness Clinics/Seminars, Refugee camp

Estimated program cost: $1000 total per student

Cost includes housing, food, transportation, and adventure day

Cost does not include: Your flight to Orlando and hotel in Orlando for one night. One night at a restaurant in Panama. Spending money for souvenirs.

Living quarters/conditions

Expect austere living conditions on this trip. You’ll be conducting street medicine in pop-up clinics, working in local hospitals, and leading public health seminars. Our accommodations will be basic: we’ll be staying in a house without air conditioning, with functional plumbing that may have occasional issues. Sleeping arrangements include bunk beds, and we’ll do our best to assign rooms to accommodate gender preferences and dietary needs. Please be mindful of these conditions when deciding to participate but know that this trip has a tremendous positive impact on the community!

What to Expect on a Multi-Day Clinic

Staff will always brief you on what to expect during a multi-day clinic, as each is unique. You will always receive breakfast, lunch, and dinner while out on multi-day. Most of the time the schedule is as follows:

Day 1- Morning: Load medical bags into marine transport
Afternoon (Dependent upon the clinic location, and the type of boat used): find clinic site and sleeping site (usually in the community school or a rancho-a roofed communal area), unload gear and set up at the sleeping location
6 pm: Dinner
Night: Most people talk to locals, play card games, listen to music, stargaze, and enjoy the night!
Day 2- 8 am: Breakfast
8:30 am: Begin setting up clinic
9 am: Begin clinic
5 pm: Pack up clinic, store for next clinic
6 pm: Dinner
Day 3- same as Day 2
Day 4- 8 am: Breakfast
9 am: See last minute follow up patients, pack bags to go home
10 am- Load bags into boat, set off for Bocas!
Afternoon: Return to base and unload gear and dinner
