Reading

On this page you can find our reading annotations as well as links to check the lexile of your book!

Here are the annotations we use when we read:

Predict-

What do you think is going to happen?

The motion for 'predict' is simply putting your index finger in the air.

Infer-

What conclusion can you make about what the author is saying even if he doesn't actually say it specifically? Use the sentence frame: I can infer _______ because the text says __________.

For example if the author says, "The boy put on a scarf before going out to play," I might write, "I can infer that it is cold outside, since the text says the boy put on a scarf."

The motion for 'infer' is your index finger to your temple.

Question-

What questions do you have about what is happening in the book at this point?

The motion for 'question' is both hands out to the side with elbows bent and a bit of a shrug.

Connect-

"This reminds me of....(another book, something I have done, or something that has happened in the world)"

The motion for 'connect' is connecting your two hands together at the fingers.

Evaluate (or 'appreciate')-

What is your judgment of the story? Did you like it? Why or why not? What did the author do well or not so well?

The motion for 'evaluate' or 'appreciate' is your two hands over your heart.

Visualize-

Draw a picture to show what you imagine this part of the story would look like

The motion for 'visualize' is making Os with your hands and putting them over your eyes like binoculars (for this footprint you draw a sketch of what you're reading)

Summarize-

Give a brief description (three details) of what you just read. It is a good idea to do this at the end of EVERY time you read.

The motion for 'summarize' is making a big circle motion with your hands/arms
