Algebra is a high school level course in which students work with linear equations, inequalities, and systems. They will write, rearrange, evaluate, and solve equations and inequalities, explaining and validating their reasoning with increased precision. Students will also deepen their understanding of functions and their ability to represent, interpret, and communicate about them—using function notation, domain and range, average rate of change, and features of graphs. They will also see categories of functions, starting with linear functions and piecewise-defined functions, followed by exponential and quadratic functions. Lastly, students will take a close look at quadratic equations. They will develop their capacity to write, transform, graph, and solve equations—by reasoning, rearranging equations into useful forms, and applying the quadratic formula. In solving quadratic equations students encounter rational and irrational solutions, providing an opportunity for them to deepen their understanding of the real number system.
Honors algebra does all of this with greater depth and complexity, adding challenging problems, and moving through content a quick pace, leaving times for students to engage in rich problem solving.
