Finite Math

"Finite Math" is a catch-all title for a collection of topics that are anything but calculus. The purpose of the course is to give a survey of mathematical analysis techniques used in the working world, but you might also say that this course gives valuable experience at organizing information and then analyzing it. A course conventionally required of business students, in which the curriculum brings together several mathematical topics, including basic probability theory, statistics, an introduction to linear programming, trig, some theory of matrices, and financial mathematics.

Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to Finite Math and to a productive and rewarding semester filled with new skills and challenges! This course enhances topics learned in Algebra II including linear and quadratic functions and graphs; polynomials, exponents and logarithms (and their graphs); the mathematics of finance; systems of equations and matrices; linear programming; probability, statistics, logic, and trigonometry. Students will also learn valuable life skills dealing with financial situations. Students will not only improve their math skills, they will enhance their critical thinking skills and their ability to participate in class discussions as well as cooperative learning situations. In addition, students will utilize technology to assist them in solving problems.

This course is demanding like a college level course. Success is attainable with practice, hard work, and dedication. It is imperative that students attend class regularly and complete all work assigned. Homework is assigned on a daily basis and students are expected to bring completed homework to class the next day. Course grades will include at minimum chapter tests, midterms, final exams, quizzes (scheduled and unscheduled), CW and HW, group activities, and discussion. There will be several small quizzes each chapter. These quizzes will help students assess their progress before the chapter test.

Students are expected to adhere to the following classroom standards and expectations:

*Be Respectful: Respect and be courteous to all students and faculty. Listen attentively to all instruction and refrain from talking without permission. Keep the classroom clean and neat.

*Be Prepared: Bring all materials to class. Students are required to have a math notebook or folder, lined paper, and graph paper. Students must also bring their packets, covered book, pencils, calculators, etc. to class every day.

*Be On Time: Students should be in their seats when the bell rings working on their daily assignments. The attendance policy of the school will be followed.

*Missing class on test days is highly frowned upon. Students will be expected to take a make-up exam when they return to class. Make-up exams will be different in form and content. Students who miss exit tickets and/or quizzes may not be entitled to make-up exams as these exams are often graded in class as part of a complete learning experience. Chapter test grades may be used to substitute grades from missed exit tickets and/or quizzes.

I am committed to the education and well-being of all students. Students are highly encouraged to attend support periods. Support periods are from 7:50-8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday during a regularly scheduled week.

I am looking forward to a great year. You can email me at acamacho@lvusd.org.
