Algebra 1

Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to Algebra 1 and to a productive and rewarding semester filled with new skills and challenges! in this course students will acquire the skills necessary to build the foundation be successful in future math and science courses. Students will enhance topics learned in their pre-algebra courses as well as explore new topics including algebraic expressions, linear equations and functions, linear inequalities, linear systems of equations and inequalities, exponents, quadratics expressions, equations, and functions, radical functions, and rational functions. This course will also strengthen their conceptual understanding of problems and mathematical reasoning in solving problems. Students will not only improve their math skills, they will enhance their critical thinking skills and their ability to participate in class discussions as well as cooperative learning situations. In addition, students will utilize technology to assist them in solving problems.

Success is attainable with practice, hard work, and dedication. It is imperative that students attend class regularly and complete all work assigned. Homework is assigned on a daily basis and students are expected to bring completed homework to class the next day. Course grades will include at minimum chapter tests, midterms, final exams, quizzes (scheduled and unscheduled), CW and HW, group activities, and discussion.

Students are expected to adhere to the following classroom standards and expectations:

*Be Respectful: Respect and be courteous to all students and faculty. Listen attentively to all instruction and refrain from talking without permission. Keep the classroom clean and neat.

*Be Prepared: Bring all materials to class. Students are required to have a math notebook or folder, lined paper, and graph paper. Students must also bring their handouts, covered book, pencils, calculators, etc. to class every day.

*Be On Time: Students should be in their seats when the bell rings working on their daily assignments. The attendance policy of the school will be followed.

*Missing class on test days is highly frowned upon. Students will be expected to take a make-up exam when they return to class. Make-up exams will be different in form and content. Students who miss exit tickets and/or quizzes may not be entitled to make-up exams as these exams are often graded in class as part of a complete learning experience. Chapter test grades may be used to substitute grades from missed exit tickets and/or quizzes.

I am committed to the education and well-being of all students. Students are highly encouraged to attend support periods. Support periods are from 7:50-8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday during a regularly scheduled week.

I am looking forward to a great year. You can email me at acamacho@lvusd.org.
