If you would like pictures and directions for the floats we have done in the past, please let me know and I will send them to you.

Good morning, Retrievers.

This week we resume our distance learning. You will notice some differences in the lesson style and expectations moving forward.

Now that you have had some practice with navigating the different sites, emails, and WebEx meetings, I will go back to teaching new concepts, skills, and content. Up to this point, I have been pretty flexible about work completion. From this week forward, these are no longer “learning opportunities.” All lessons and work I assign is required to be completed. Just like it is when were are in the classroom together. I am required to track your participation and report to Mrs. Starkovich every week.

The assignments I provide will be used for your report card grades at the end of the year. This includes projects and lessons posted in Google Classroom, Investigations Math, and MobyMax lessons and assessments. You will be able to see your grades via google classroom, MobyMax, and Mth Investigations. It is important that you are putting forth your very best effort and really paying attention when reading and responding on lessons as they will count as part of your Science and Math grades for this trimester.

This week we will meet Wednesday and Friday at 10:00 a.m. on WebEx.

Mrs. Wafler

Dear Retrievers,

Here we go! I am really excited about this part of the Social Studies project. Even though we are all experiencing this strange new way of working together, think about how cool it is! This is how adults are collaborating for their jobs right now.

Remember, I am here to help you! Please let me know if you need help emailing your group, setting up our meeting, or anything else! I can run WebEx meetings today and tomorrow to help you.

Social Studies:

Before you fill in the presentation doc:

I have created a blank collaboration schedule for you to fill in to determine when and how you will be sharing your research and task as a group. This first doc is only a schedule to help you get together with your group. To set your schedule:

  • Email each other to coordinate before adding it to the Google doc.
  • Send a group email and make sure all of your group members are in the “To:” box.
  • Remember to “Reply to all” when responding. (Use the 3 dots next to the reply arrow to find the “Reply to all” option.) Please include me in your emails, so I can help coordinate if needed.
  • The schedule needs to be filled out today, Thursday.
  • You may use Skype, Facetime, Google Hangouts, or Schedule a WebEx with me. You must ALL agree on program keeping in mind that not everyone has these. You all have access to google hangouts through your school google account and I am happy to run a WebEx for you. You should plan on collaborating today or tomorrow.

After You Collaborate:

I have created a Google doc for you and your partners to add the information you will be sharing in your presentation. It will also help you divide up the presentation. Once you have had your collaboration with your group you will fill it in. I have left directions on the Google classroom assignment. Be sure to READ them. :)

Then I will repost the slides to your group projects. Look for them on Thursday.

  • You will see the assignment Conserving Water Proposal. Click on the assignment and read the directions. You will use 2 resources to help guide your diagram. The first source: I have reassigned the MobyMax lesson How Do We Get Water to Our Homes? NOT for you to redo, but to find the page that has the diagram that shows you how water gets to our home. You may use that diagram to RECREATE your diagram at home AND/OR (second source:)I have posted pages from the Science Book that also shows the process of how water gets to our home and ways we can conserve it. You should use both of the sources to help with your project.
  • You will have to submit the written portion of this project in google classroom Homeroom Science. Click on the assignment Conserving Water Family Proposal and create a document. You will add your typed proposal to the Google classroom assignment.

Tuesday 3/31:

Social Studies:

Log on to Google Classroom Social Studies and complete the British Acts slides. You will be in a shared presentation with your group. Find your Act and fill in ONLY your portion of the assignment.

Math: Prodigy or MobyMax. I think we ironed out the issues with Prodigy yesterday. Is seems like using the username and Google login that I posted in the Math classroom is the way to go. Prodigy is Quest based, so don’t worry that it look like a game. Just keep going. I think it self levels after you take the placement test. Then it will change as I start to assign skills for you to work on. If you don’t like the format, feel free to work on MobyMax. YOu should be working on some kind of Math for 45-60 minutes a day.(Feel free to break that up, so it isn’t all at once 15-25 minute chunks are fine.)

Reading:

The new reading passages are linked the the original lesson posted in the Reading classroom from last week. Click on the assignment again and in the top left corner you will see an arrow and link that says “Assignments.” that will take you to everything that I have posted so far. I will see if I can figure out how to make each new assignment its own post in Google classroom moving forward.

When we return from Spring Break, we will resume with A Wrinkle in Time.

3/23/2020

Happy Monday, my sweet Retrievers.

I hope you all had a good weekend and enjoyed some time with your families. The habit of the week is Habit #6: Synergize. Ask what you can do around the house to help out. If you have a younger sibling(s) see if you can help with their school work or read to them.

I do not have any new assignments for you this week. I gave you quite a list last week, so keep working on those. I am so proud of all of you that have logged on to do some work. Remember, I am here to answer questions help via email. I am going to look into some virtual meeting programs this week. My hope is that we can to a face to screen on Friday. :) I will send out a message later his week with the details.

House Keeping: Though I am not giving new assignments this week, I do want to let you know I may be reassigning some of the assignments you have already completed. Just because you are at home and on a digital platform does not mean my expectations have changed. I still expect you to be using complete sentences when answering questions. When the questions are more in depth, you should: restate the question, answer the question, give examples, and explain. When answering questions, written or multiple choice, you should be looking back at the text to confirm your answer. Effort, effort, effort!

I will going through all MobyMax assignments, ReadWorks stories and Discovery Kids articles to read your responses and look at your answers. If you are not achieving a 75% or better on your assignment or task, I will be reassigning them.

Additionally, if you are having trouble viewing the Colonies Map and wish to work on your notes, you need to be signed into your Google account through the Chrome browser. It is accessible through the user icon at the very top right corner of your browser window. Check with you parents and let them know before you do it. Signing into the browser with your LVJUSD account will change the bookmarks bar for you, too.

Remember you are not expected to work on these assignments over the weekends. Get outside to play and exercise, but please follow the guidelines for keeping your distance from others. I love you and hope to see your faces later this week.

Love,

Mrs. Wafler

You will need to be patient as I have created accounts with some educational sites that we haven’t used together in the classroom. For some of these, you will have to create an account using codes/ links. I have outlined step by step instructions that you can follow.

Please keep in mind that this is just to get us started, I will adjust our assignments based on participation. Therefore, I will be monitoring all activities and making updates as we go.

Below are the online assignments for the rest of this week and next week. I will be sending these plans each week to your LVJUSD email account. Please remember, your lessons do not include the weekends. Your job is to continue your education as best as you possibly can.

In addition to these learning opportunities, take some time to be outside, read some books, do some crafts, and above all enjoy being with your family. Maybe even clean a bathroom. :)

If you ever have any questions regarding your assignments, you may email me at ewafler@lvjusd.org. I will be available during regular school hours, 8:00 a.m-3:00 p.m. If you email me after 3, I will get back to you the next morning. Good Luck and have some fun!!!

Love Your Teacher,

Mrs. Wafler

Week of 3/19-3/27

Math:

I have created a playlist through Pearson Realize, our Math program, to review additive volume. It is activity style and not one we have done in the classroom yet. It looked fun to me. I have created an assignment in the Math Google Classroom that will link you to the activity. I believe it has a page that needs to be printed, but If you can’t print get creative and solve that problem. Please feel free to share how it is going or post questions on the assignment in Google Classroom.

Additionally, finish up any outstanding MabMax lessons that have been previously been assigned.

Reading:

I assigned two Literature stories for you to read through a site called Read Works. It is linked through our Reading Google Classroom, and you shouldn’t have to create a new account for it.

You will be reading and completing vocabulary activities for:

  • Magic in the Classroom
  • Keep looking

Social Studies: I have created a Classroom in Kids Discover. Please carefully read the directions below to get logged into my classroom:

  5. Enter in the 6-digit Classroom Code of the classroom: 83FCA3
  6. Click SIGN UP FOR STUDENT ACCOUNT

Once you are logged in, I have assigned 3 articles in my classroom that I would like for you to read. They are as follows:

  • Britain's 13 Colonies
  • Trouble Brewing
  • Newsmaker of ‘76

Each article comes with a quiz I would like for you to take. I would like to set up a group chat to discuss what you’ve read. I will be working on the best way to do that with some help from Mrs. Rivera.

Science: For Science this week, I have posted 3 MobyMax Science Lessons:

  • Oceans
  • Fresh Water
  • How do we get water to our homes?

Please read these lessons carefully and complete the tasks that come along with them. I will check on your scores to see how you are doing. I would like to conduct a group chat for these readings as well. I will let you know as soon as I have more information about that.

Additionally, Mrs Higgins in sending out a code for a Google Classroom she created. Please let me know if you don’t receive it, or can’t remember how to join a new classroom.

Communication is essential for family success because

Leader in Me- Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, then be Understood

What does this mean?

I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings. I try to see things from their viewpoint (paradigm). I listen to others without interrupting. I listen with my ears, my eyes, and my heart. I am confident in voicing my ideas. Below is an activity you can practice at home with your child, family members, or significant other.

Below is an activity you can practice at home with your child:

Is there an issue you and your child always argue about? If so, go to your child and say, “Help me understand your point of view.” Then really listen without interruptions. When your child is finished, repeat in your own words what you heard until he or she acknowledges feeling understood. Then it’s your turn to speak and your child’s turn to listen. You may want to use a “Talking Stick” when you are having this discussion. Only the person holding the Talking Stick is allowed to speak and doesn’t pass the stick to the other person until he or she feels understood.

Future skills that can be learned by putting first things first:

  1. Demonstrate time management skills.
  2. Cultivate a strong work ethic, flexibility, and adaptability.
  3. Develop intrapersonal skills of self management.
  4. Be accountable and responsible for actions and results.

Leader in Me: Habit 1: Be Proactive

What does this mean?

Be Proactive is about taking responsibility for your life. You can't keep blaming everything on your parents or grandparents. Proactive people recognize that they are "response-able." They don't blame genetics, circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for their behavior. They know they choose their behavior. Reactive people, on the other hand, are often affected by their physical environment. They find external sources to blame for their behavior. If the weather is good, they feel good. If it isn't, it affects their attitude and performance, and they blame the weather.

Below are activities you can practice at home with your child, family members, or significant other:

Working On Your Circle of Influence

Have family members discuss some things that they do not have direct influence over, such as other people’s thoughts and actions, the weather, seasons, and natural disasters. Help everyone understand that although there are some things we cannot influence, there is much that we can influence. Talk about how much more effective it is to concentrate energy and effort on what you can influence.

Graded Work:

The current grades posted are in Reading, Language Arts, and Math. These classrooms include quizzes and graded classwork assignments from this trimester. Graded work is sent home every Friday along with missing assignment slips. If you'd like to see your child's progress, ask to see their VIB and work for the week.

Students have set "Wildly Important Goals" for this trimester. They will be recording and analyzing grades and other data on a weekly basis to track their progress towards these goals. They will present these goals to you during their conferences.

Leader in Me:

Habit 6: Synergize

What does this mean?

Innovate and problem solve with those who have a different point of view.

Below is an activity you can practice at home with your child:

Communication is essential for family success because

it enables family members to share thoughts and opinions, make decisions, solve problems and develop interpersonal relationships. And the best way to heighten communication is to increase family interaction. Cutting back on individual activities in favor of family time, eating meals together as a family, or having a family night.

Thank you EVERYONE who helped make the Spaghetti Feed a success. I appreciate all your help. A special Thank You to Lauren Mena who organized a silent auction which, along with the tip jars at the tables, brought in $400.

I am still waiting on final numbers from Camp Arroyo to find out how much we made from the event as a whole. Thank you again to all who helped and attended. It was really a fun time.

This concludes all of our fundraising for this year's trip. We will be sending home permission slips and "donations" needed per family to meet the cost of camp upon our return from Winter Break. Great Job class of 2019-20!!!

Leader in Me: Habit 3: Put First Things First

What does this mean?

Habit 3 means focusing on the task when there's something else you would rather be doing — the hardest part of all!

Future skills that can be learned by putting first things first:

  1. Demonstrate time management skills.
  2. Cultivate a strong work ethic, flexibility, and adaptability.
  3. Develop intrapersonal skills of self management.
  4. Be accountable and responsible for actions and results.
  5. Begin to cultivate analytical skills.

“He who fails to plan, plans to fail.” “Leaders don’t make excuses.”

Below are activities you can practice at home with your child, family members, or significant other:

Upper Grades:

  1. Create a list of things that your child needs to accomplish throughout the week. With your child rank the tasks by importance. Rewrite the list in order and put it by the calendar or someplace that will be seen throughout the week.
  2. Design and decorate your own planner.
  3. Role play consequences of not studying as opposed to studying. Then role play how it feels to be prepared, and how it feels to be unprepared.

Talk about how much more effective it is to concentrate energy and effort on what you can influence.

This week we will be reviewing and practicing Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, then be Understood

Language: This week we started our first spelling unit. The students will be taking a test on these words on Friday. Please help them study. They will also have daily assignments to help the students become familiar with the spelling pattern we are covering for the week.

Math: This is our first unit within the Investigations 3 curriculum. In this unit, students are learning the order of operations, some beginning multiplication strategies that will be developed further in a later unit, and some estimation and long division strategies.

Last week, the students took a beginning of the year Math test. This is NOT a part of their grade for the trimester. It is just a tool I use to see where we need to start with some of our concepts this year. My biggest take away was that we need practice with MATH FACTS!!!! Please be practicing these with your kiddos!!!!

Science: Our first unit is covering Physical Science. The students are just wrapping up their studies of the properties of matter. This week we will be covering mixtures and compounds. Expect to see nightly homework on Google Classroom.

Social Studies: After reviewing some basic U.S. geography and map skills, we are now moving into our Native American unit. Students have begun this unit by studying some of America’s Pre-Columbian civilizations and will be starting a group project about Native American Cultural Regions. Look for some exciting and engaging assignments on Google Classroom.

Camp: We are in the beginning stages of planning for Camp. We will be attending Camp Arroyo January 15-17th. We will hold a parent meeting soon to go over some of the cost and fundraising logistics that we will need help with. On August 27th, the kids received forms for our first fund raiser. We are selling cookie dough! This fundraiser helped us knock a big chunk out of our cost for camp last year. I will need a parent volunteer or two the week of Oct 14th, exact date is still TBD, to help sort and pass out the cookie dough when it arrives. Thank you in advance!

If you are interested in organizing additional fundraising opportunities this year, please let me know.
