HAVE FINISHED ALL 20 HOURS OF SERVICE
BETWEEN THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL AND JUNE 1ST.
YOU MAY SUBMIT IN BITS AND PIECES OR WAIT TO SUBMIT UNTIL YOU'VE ACCUMULATED ALL 20 HOURS—EITHER IS FINE.
STEP 1: Complete your service hours
What counts for acceptable community service hours
for GHS National Honor Society?
Note: For NHS, you may count hours you’ve completed for other programs, such as IB, CSF, etc. However, check with the other organization to see whether they allow you to “double-dip.”
Examples of Acceptable Community Service Ideas
ALL OF THESE MUST BE UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF AN ORGANIZATION OR ADVISER
Volunteering at animal rescue organizations
Beach/city/park clean-up with an organization
Working at races/walks for charity with an organization
Referee/coach sports for children or disabled (You cannot get paid)
Donating time to a local school or library reading to children
Donating time at a nursing home reading to residents, playing music, entertainment, or participating in activities
Tutoring other students, unpaid and supervised by school staff, as long as you are not receiving credit for another club or school organization
On-campus volunteering for school functions outside of school hours
Interning or volunteering somewhere that serves the community
Examples of Non-approved Community Service Ideas
Helping your neighbor catch her cat
Helping a neighbor move
Dog walking for a friend or babysitting
Helping file papers at your aunt’s office
Beach cleanup on your own or with your family (not through an organization)
Pulling weeds at the playground on your own
Reading to kids while babysitting
Singing at the nursing home as part of a required activity for your choir; reading to your grandmother at her nursing home
Tutoring for payment; helping your brother or sister with homework
Internship or volunteering at a for-profit business
Anything you received payment or compensation for or working for your family business
STEP 2: Fill out and get signatures from the service organization director or coordinator
STEP 3: Upload your completed form (with signatures) to the NHS Adviser/Parliamentarian by completing the Google Form below
NOTE: Parents may NOT sign for their children as an alternative to getting signatures from the charity sponsor or director. If the parent IS the sponsor or the director, please contact Mrs. McMichael first.
