and Benefits
Membership in our NHS chapter is one of the highest honors that can be earned by a student. Members must show that they represent the four pillars of NHS: Character, Leadership, Service, and Scholarship.
Being eligible to become a member of NHS means the following:
you have maintained a cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.7 or above (not rounded)
you are in 10th, 11th, 12th grade
NEW MEMBERS
Complete the membership application in its entirety
Meet all scholarship, leadership, and character requirements
No instances of violation of the Secondary School Discipline Policy, the Cheating Policy, the Academic Honesty Policy, Behavioral Absolutes, P.R.I.D.E. Contract, or any other behavior infractions (Note: If a student believes an explanation of a policy infraction is necessary, that may be included in the application)
You can simultaneously run for office on the same application
Obtain a teacher recommendation attesting to your scholarship (may not be a relative)
Obtain an adult recommendation attesting to your character (may not be a relative; must be over 18)
Pay the annual NHS dues of $20
The dues we collect go toward graduation regalia, the fall induction ceremony, our service projects, donations to non-profit organizations, and potential chapter scholarships.
Attend the induction ceremony each year (date TBA)
RETURNING MEMBERS
Returning NHS members will complete a simple application process each year once they've been inducted. They will also pay their $20 dues annually to maintain their membership
And maintaining your membership once you are admitted requires that you complete:
mandatory participation in service project hours—20 per year, reported in June
attendance at regular chapter meetings is highly encouraged but not required; see the Important Dates pages for meeting times
maintenance of your scholarship, leadership, and character requirements
confirmation each year of your membership; payment of dues is required each year, but subsequent years will be a more streamlined application process once you've been inducted
Benefits of membership include:
special recognition at graduation in the form of graduation gown regalia (e.g. different cords/stoles depending on how many years you've been a member, etc.)
Members in good standing for all 3 years = graduation stole
Members in good standing for senior year but not all 3 years = graduation cords
Those who graduate as non-members but were a member when they were in earlier grades will not receive cords at graduation; in order to receive graduation regalia, you must be a member in good standing at the time of graduation
special induction ceremony for students and parents as recognition of high achievement
opportunity to list a prestigious, nationally-recognized organization on your college applications
opportunities for leadership by becoming a chapter officer or leading service projects
completion of service projects that can help others in the community
scholarship opportunities available through the national organization
