Important notes:
An open hole flute will be required for late middle school into high school. These kinds of flutes can be rented if an open hole flute is too expensive for your child to start out on.
There are many more brands than the ones listed below. Feel free to do your own research (always check reviews!) or contact a local music store such as Nazareth Music Center or Hawk Music to learn about your options. This page should be a good starting point for your instrument search.
Renting an instrument is a cost-effective way for your child to access a higher quality instrument. Click a box to the right for various rental options.
Purchasing a used instrument can be a great way to save money. However, to ensure you are getting a working instrument, I recommend buying from a reputable music store such as Nazareth Music Center or Hawk Music Center.
Without a trained eye, it can be difficult to tell if an instrument from Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or eBay is in good condition. Many of these instruments end up needing repairs that can cost hundreds of dollars.
BEWARE OF CHEAP INSTRUMENTS! Instruments under $200 (such as Mendini, Glory, and similar brands) are typically very low quality and often do not function properly. These instruments create significant problems for students learning to play and are not permitted in the band program.
