This program offers a structured pathway for wildland firefighters to advance from fundamental skills to intermediate-level leadership and specialized roles, covering safety protocols, tactical operations, and incident management.
Beginner courses focus on basic wildland firefighting skills, safety systems (Standard Firefighting Orders and LCES, etc.), fire behavior, and hands-on exercises in fireline construction and equipment use. Courses emphasize portable water delivery, chainsaw operation, and fire behavior fundamentals, giving students the groundwork needed for safe and effective firefighting.
Intermediate courses expand on these basics with advanced training for leadership positions, such as Firing Boss, Crew Boss, and Heavy Equipment Boss. Students learn about firing operations, dozer management, and wildfire behavior in wildland/urban fires. Specialized classes cover incident business management, ensuring firefighters are equipped with tactical, logistical, and managerial skills. Leadership development courses enhance teamwork and decision-making under high-stress conditions, preparing firefighters for real-world challenges and advancing their incident command skills as well as career advancement opportunities.
By taking specific WRTC courses, one will be eligible for an entry level job with any fire station crew, EMNRD, State Forestry, or as a Hotshot Crew Member (nationwide).
