Advisement

What Advisors Do?

Advisors help students in selecting, adding, changing, or dropping classes on student schedule. This process is also meant to help students navigate the institutions and the majors policies and procedures. Advisors are aware of ongoing events and campus resources  and can direct students to tutoring, counseling, and other services.

In order to get advisement please contact Renee Maestas in Student Services (505) 454-5355.

Career and Technical Education

Luna Community College’s Career and Technical Education programs are designed to produce academically, technically, and professionally sound citizens to meet the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century job market. We offer a broad curriculum that includes certificate programs and associate in applied science degrees. Our goal is to provide hands-on learning environments that prepare students for modern industry careers.

Education

The Early Childhood & Teacher Education Department at Luna Community College has two associate and one certificate state articulated programs that prepare early childhood teachers and elementary and secondary paraprofessional teachers. The department has maintained and worked as a quality unit to produce qualified and conscientious professionals. The Birth through Grade 3 licensure track is designed for students who intend to transfer to a 4-year institution and can lead to state licensure. The Teacher Education program has generally been accepted by most other 4-year state institutions of higher education. For licensure purposes the Teacher Education and ECME Birth through Grade 3 programs prepare students for immediate employment as paraprofessionals within the state public education system.

Humanities

The Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts teaches effective oral and written communication concepts. Students will gain the ability to identify and define problems and tasks, the ability to think independently and creatively as well as the ability to organize ideas and create solutions. It allows students to use the degree as either a stand-alone or a transfer degree. This AA degree provides students transferring to four-year schools with the curriculum needed for the first two years of a baccalaureate study and will offer the skills and attributes essential in a competitive job market. The general education core completed in the process of this degree meets industry standards and is also accepted by all New Mexico state colleges and universities.

Nursing

Luna Community College Department of Nursing Curriculum is taught using the NMNEC State Wide Curriculum Model. All required elements of the program are taught using a concept based delivery method. Blackboard and Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) are used to support the curriculum delivery.

In order for the graduate to become a Registered Nurse they will need to take and pass the NCLEX exam.

STEM

STEM is the term used to group together these academic disciplines. The United States has been a global leader, for the large part, through the hard work and innovative work of scientists, engineers, and innovators. As our world continues to become increasingly complex, where success is measured and defined not only by what you know, but also by what you can do, it is more important than ever that students are equipped with the knowledge, skills and expertise to solve complex problems, gather and evaluate, and make sense of information. These are the skills that students in STEM learn.

LCC’s STEM Programs prepare students for technical positions in STEM fields and offers a direct pathway for advanced STEM degrees at other four-year institutions. See our STEM
Advisors or any of the individual program advisors for more information on STEM opportunities that await you here at Luna Community College.
