Health Electives

Movies, Media, & Your Mind 

(9th - 12th Grade Elective) 

This class is designed to utilize narratives and storylines from film, documentaries, and media to provide messages that broaden awareness of mental health and mental health issues facing today’s youth. Messages of empathy, grit, passion and perseverance will be analyzed and debated as students identify their own values and skills that lead to success. 

Students will learn ways to improve their mental health, cope with stress, and become resilient individuals. This class will also include an in-depth analysis of social media platforms; identifying how the dynamics of digital communities impact users emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Through the lens of social cohesion, students will eliminate stigmas surrounding mental health conditions, gain an understanding of digital citizenship, and develop skills that foster resilience and social connectedness.

Drugs & Social Issues

(9th - 12th Grade Elective) 

What are the laws that apply to the choices you make regarding drugs, alcohol and the misuse of social media? If you have questions about these topics, this class has the answers. This health course explores the background of current social issues including drugs, alcohol and social media with a special focus on their legal ramifications. Students will learn about specific laws, the legal process and the long-term consequences from a variety of perspectives. This class will employ interactive projects, guest speakers and current events to reinforce the curriculum. The goal of this course is to help students make more informed decisions about their futures.


Sports Medicine

(9th - 12th Grade Elective) 

This class is designed for students interested in fields such as Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, Fitness, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Sport Nutrition, and other careers related to Sports Medicine. This class includes both classroom work, as well as hands-on application, in order to provide students with an avenue to explore the curriculum.Through these connections, students will understand the importance that exercise, treatment modalities, and rehabilitation play in athletic health, and get greater insight to the various careers surrounding the sports industry.

* Peer Leadership*

( 12th Grade Elective *Interview Required*) 

Peer Leadership will train students to help other students cope with problems common to teenagers. Through this training, students learn how to listen, understand and communicate with others. Information about stress, alcohol, drugs and other issues will be highlighted. Students will utilize skills to act as peer leaders to students in all district schools.
