National Junior Honor Society Application Process
The criteria for this organization is set by the National Junior Honor Society and the Lindenhurst Middle School National Junior Honor Society. The purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to encourage good citizenship, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.
There are five requirements that students must achieve before applying for the National Junior Honor Society:
The first requirement for membership is Scholarship. Students must obtain a minimum academic cumulative average of 90% with no report card grade lower than 80 in any subject for the first two marking periods of the school year. This must be verified by the guidance counselor.
The second requirement is Service. Students must have completed at least two service activities. These activities are non-paying activities and may include: planting gardens for the church, Jump Rope for Heart, assisting with a charity run, etc. Service activities must be verified by the person in charge of the activity. Within the service activities, candidates must complete a minimum of ten hours of community service.
The third requirement is Citizenship. Students must be a member of at least two teams, clubs, or groups (or any combination) for a minimum of at least 5 months. This includes: Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America, league or school sports teams or dance teams, or be an active member of a school club (School Store, Student Council, Spanish Club, etc). The citizenship requirement must be verified by the troop leader, coach, or advisor.
The fourth requirement is Leadership. Students must be a leader in at least two activities. Some of these may include: being a captain of the team, organizing a fundraiser, or being an active member of Student Council. The leadership requirement must also be verified by the coach, group leader, or advisor.
The fifth requirement is Character. As defined by the National Junior Honor Society, a student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards, honesty, and reliability, and shows courtesy, concern and respect for others. A candidate can not be suspended at any time throughout the school year. All character verifications will be made by the student’s classroom teachers and the appropriate Assistant Principal.
Selection for membership is by a Faculty Council and is based on outstanding scholarship, service, citizenship, leadership, and character. Students accepted will then be inducted at a formal induction ceremony at the end of May.
