Language Arts Handbook

Welcome to 6th grade Language Arts. I am sure you have many questions about this year and I want to share some information with you that may be helpful. We are looking forward to having a fun and successful year. You will be expected to be in class on time and prepared each day.

Expectations and Policies:

Students should be prepared to learn each & every day. To accomplish this goal, please bring the following items with you to Language Arts every day:

  • Fully charged laptop ~ We will use our laptops almost every day. If you are not prepared because your laptop is not charged, you will miss the opportunity to complete your assignments during class time. You will then need to complete the work at home, and you will lose points from the "PMG" category of your overall grade.
  • Pencil case with sharpened pencils
  • Agenda Book
  • Independent Reading Book

* A Note about Water Bottles: Water bottles are permitted in class (as long as they don't become a distraction). WATER is the ONLY beverage permitted in the classroom.

* A Note about Food: Eating and/or gum chewing is not permitted. Do not bring any food, gum, or candy with you to class.

* A Note about Cell Phones: The district policy requires that all cell phones be turned off and kept in your locker during school hours. Do not bring your cell phone to class.

Grading

Your grade will be calculated on a total points system with each category making up the following percentages:

Assignments 30%

Tests/Projects 35%

Quizzes 25%

PMG/Citizenship 10%

PMG Includes effort, compliance, behavior, cooperation, participation and their impact on performance, achievement and mastery.

Assignments

Assignments are designed to you to allow you to practice skills learned that day or as an extension to material that has been taught. You are expected write all assignments in your agenda book, and bring the book to all of your classes every day. If you do not write down your assignments you are still responsible for them, please be sure to check your teacher’s website, Google calendars or Google Classroom for updated assignments.

Graded Assignments

Assignments handed in on the day they are due = full credit.

Assignments handed in 1 day late = 1/2 credit (50%)

Assignments handed in 2 or more days late= Zero (0%)

Tests and Quizzes

Students will be notified approximately a week in advance for all tests. Some quizzes will be announced and some will be unannounced.

Attendance:

If you are absent from school, it is your responsibility to find out about, and complete, any work that was given. You may check Google Classroom, email me, or speak directly with me about this. The makeup time allotted is equal to the amount of time that you were absent. For example, if you were out for one day, you will be given one additional day to complete any missed work.
