In the Introduction to Biology unit, we will consider what it means to be a scientist and we will learn some basic scientific principles that we will use throughout the course (evolution by natural selection).
In the Chemistry of Life unit, we will study the basics of chemistry necessary to understand living things. This will include a discussion of the four major organic compounds.
In the Enzymes and Digestion unit, you will apply what you learned in the Chemistry of Life unit to enzymes and the human body.
In the Dynamic Cell unit, we will study the cell, including its structure, how cells get nutrients and get rid of wastes, and we will apply our knowledge to gain a better understanding of the human circulatory and the respiratory systems.
In the Code of Life unit, we will study the experiments that led to the discovery of DNA as the molecule of inheritance. We will also study why DNA is so important in cells and how it controls traits.
In the Reproduction and Development unit, we will study why and how cells and organisms reproduce, including mitosis, sperm and egg production (meiosis), and the human reproductive system.
In the Heredity unit, we will study Mendelian genetics and inheritance patterns, including how to use Punnett squares and pedigrees.
In the Evolution and Biodiversity unit, we will study the process of evolution by natural selection, including evidence for evolution and current applications of evolution in your life.
In the Ecology unit, we will study relationships between different organisms as well as their interactions with the environment.
