Small Groups
What are Small Groups?
Small Groups are a chance for students to relate with their peers in a small, non-threatening environment over teen-related issues. Examples of support groups include the following:
Squash the Ants! Learn how to stop negative thinking patterns and become more positive and focused.
Family Change: This group provides support to students who are experiencing changes in the family (divorce, separation, blended family, foster system, or adoption).
Girl's Heart: This is a group for girls to discuss issues that adolescent girls face on a regular basis at home and school. Topics include: body image, relationships, stressors, and kindness. 6-8 grade groups available.
Stressed Out!: This group is designed to provide support to students who feel anxious, sad and overwhelmed. Students will identify triggers and learn to use coping skills when dealing with life situations.
When are groups?
Support groups are held during the school day for the length of one class period, for six consecutive weeks. Groups are always on the same day of the week, but rotate hours so that only one class period is missed per group session.
We have both Fall & Spring sessions available for students.
How do I sign up?
This is voluntary for students who want to participate. Following sign ups, the counseling staff will screen students and give a parent permission slip to be signed at home and brought back to Summit Lakes. Students may also stop by the guidance office to speak to a counselor about the groups, and parents may also call the counseling office and request their student be a part of a particular support group.
