Dear Parents,
It is truly a joy to teach your child! Thank you for all the help and support you give at home. It makes a world of difference.
Our school day begins at 8:45 A.M. Our homeroom time gives your child a chance to get organized for the day and turn in homework. Getting to school on time starts the day in a positive way, and teaches your child the importance of being prompt.
If your child is absent from school, please email me or send in a note to let me know. If I do not receive a note or email, I am required to list it as an unexcused absence on your child's record.
Our lunch period is 11:35- 12:05 daily. We will have recess daily, weather permitting.
Please be sure your child comes to school dressed for the weather each day.
Students should have sneakers in school Phys. Ed. on B,C,D, & E days.
Take-home Folders and Agendas:
Each student has a take-home folder and an agenda. Please check take-home folders and agendas daily for homework that is sent home, initial the agenda, and send them back to school daily. Our homework assignments will generally be the same each week. Generally, daily assignments are to study weekly spelling words and read 20 minutes each day, although this may vary based on our curriculum and testing schedule:
If there is no school on Friday, the weekly spelling test will take place on Thursday.
Classroom discipline:
I have high expectations for student behavior. They serve as role models for the younger students and I know they are able to behave in a responsible and respectful manner throughout the school day. This isn’t always an easy task, but I will work with my class this year to be the best that they can be with academics and behavior. I think the best way to succeed with classroom management is to establish the rules from the start and be consistent.
Discipline Plan and Procedures:
We have 3 rules in our classroom: Respect people, respect property and respect learning.
Classroom rules will be taught, rehearsed, and reinforced beginning on the first day of school and continuing throughout the year.
If a student continues with an inappropriate behavior after reminders, they will complete a “Think About It” sheet that contains the following questions for the student to answer:
Your behavior is your choice. Which behavior of yours has broken a class rule?
How is your behavior affecting others?
What will you do to improve your behavior?
When completed by the student, this sheet is discussed with and signed by the teacher, then the sheet will go home to be signed by a parent or guardian.
If students follow our class rules, we will create a happy and respectful classroom culture. Students will enjoy free time, recess, and other fun activities while building a positive classroom community!
Snack:
We will have a snack time each afternoon. Please send in a healthy snack for your child for snack time. Students may bring in a water bottle to keep in the classroom during the day.
Communication:
I feel that parent-teacher communication is very important, so I will be keeping in contact periodically via email, Seesaw, and our weekly class newsletter. Parents can also find schedules, study guides and more on this second grade website.
Birthdays
You may send in a birthday treat for your child if you choose to do so. We have 14 students in our class. For those students who have summer birthdays, we celebrate half- birthdays (6 months before their next birthday). All birthday and party treats should be store-bought. Please do not send any treats in that contain strawberries, tomatoes, peanuts, or tree nuts.
Seating Arrangements
Periodically, I will switch the students’ desks around. If you or your child ever has a problem with where they are sitting, please let me know so I can accommodate him or her.
If you ever have any questions or problems, feel free to call me at school (716) 926-3758, send a message via See Saw, or send me an email (donna.gawlik@lscsd.org). I look forward to a great year working with you and your child!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Gawlik
