Our solution is to apply for a grant to buy a composting unit and other supplies for our school. Our Civics in Action class last year created a community garden as their solution and by getting a compost we can add to their project while having our own idea and solution. Not only will the compost help solve our problem of food waste in our school, but it will also benefit our school community garden. This problem is important because schools are a top contender of food waste and 1 in 5 children go hungry everyday.
There are multiple advantages to our solution of getting the Green School Program Grant. In doing so, we would be helping the environment by producing less waste here at the high school. And as mentioned before, getting the grant and supplies will encourage more involvement at our school. Many different clubs, like the Garden Club and Green Eagles could get involved with the upkeep of the compost. The garden club can use the compost that the composting unit would make instead of having to out source the compost. As well as eventually if enough compost is produced, community members could use the compost as well. Students in science, social studies, and our life skills students could also get involved and participate in the use of the composting unit. Those who need service hours for government or NHS would be able to get those if they were to help out with it too.
The biggest disadvantage of our solution would not be not getting the grant. Without the money from the grant, we cannot make our vision come to life. We would have to find a different grant or possibly try to do a fundraiser to get the money to pay for the composting supplies. Another road block that can be ran into is the involvement. Ultimately our vision is only going to continue if people get involved. So, if there is a lack of interest in composting then our project won't have as much involvement to have it thrive.
Our solution to the problem of food waste promotes the general welfare to the Lake Shore community because it will make a positive change to the area. This solution does not go against the Constitution or other Amendments or Bills created under the government. New York State also has encouraged schools in New York to participate in recycling and reusable activities to help better the environment.
The government is not allowed to:
-Interfere with a person's freedom of belief
-Place unreasonable and unfair limits on a person's right to express themselves in speech, writing, or by other means
-Take a person's life, liberty, or property without giving that person a fair hearing in a court of law before another authorized agency of government
-Invade the privacy of a person's home without a reason in doing so
-Make laws that unreasonably or unfairly discriminate against people on the basis of race, religion, age, ethnic group, or gender
It is evident that our action does not go against any of the items listed above and the government has no need to act in such ways for our project. Our project uplifts the citizens of the town and does the opposite of taking away rights and liberties, but instead, gives opportunities.
