For me personally, I really wanted to find a way to give back to the school and community. A big problem in the community is hunger and food insecurity and the Civics in Action class made a garden last year to try and solve the problem. And that's how my idea of composting came to life, because it could add on to the great work that has been done by former students. In doing this project I learned just how severe food waste is in the U.S. and how more people should take action to help this nationwide problem. This project has shown me that it is possible for anyone to make changes in their life and their community. My group members and I have worked hard on making our ideas come to life and I am proud of what we have accomplished throughout this project.
This project has been a really positive learning experience for me and has given me lots of insight as to the impact food waste has on our lives. I knew that globally it was a big problem, but I never realized how big of a contributer schools were to it. Because of this, we decided to focus on how we can reduce food waste in our school specifically and chose to implement a composting system that would go along with the community garden created by the students last year. While working through this project, I learned that putting even a little bit of an effort into a topic you care about, can go a really long way into making a change.
This project has made me open my eyes to see the impact that food waste has on our community and environment. I have heard my whole life that the food waste around the country was bad, but it never occurred to me on how much food was actually being wasted especially in schools, until we did this project. Some things that I learned by doing this project was that you can put in so much effort or so little effort and still get good outcomes. I'm so proud of all the work that my group has accomplished during this project. This topic can make changes in the future, positive changes. We spent weeks on it, and it is now coming all together and could go a long way making a positive change.
Why did we choose this topic?
We chose this topic because in our daily lives we see so much waste just within our community that it caught our attention. Food waste is not just a problem in New York, but everywhere in the world, especially in the United States. This topic heavily affects our environment and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, global warming and landfills. The quality of food has significantly declined while quantities of waste has drastically inclined. In raising awareness for this problem, we could help lower waste and improve our community and hopefully change the state of food waste in many other places.
