Band of the Future Night
Yes! The positive relationship between the fine arts programs and the athletic department is something that we value greatly. There has never been a situation that we have not been able to work out between programs. Our philosophy in the band program is to provide the best experience possible for our students and that includes encouraging them to follow their passions throughout their time at Seneca.
We know that the summer band and fall schedule can look intimidating. We front load the learning in August so that once school begins, students have time to participate in band and maintain their academic responsibilities. Please recognize that with all of your hard work you receive a Varsity Letter and can be used to opt out of P.E/Gym after 9th grade. Marching band usually lasts through the first week of November.
The majority of our students actually have better grades during marching season because they quickly refine their time management skills and have a support group of students who are in, or have already taken the courses you are in.
Absolutely! You likely have participated in a middle school program that has equipped you with all of the necessary skills to be in the high school band. Everyone who has performed with the Seneca Band has once been in your shoes.
If you are brand new to an instrument, you are still welcome to join. We'll teach you the basics!
We recommend all students get set up with a private teacher for maximum value, but it is not required.
Only if you're afraid of fun! Marching Band is a new and exciting opportunity. You will have plenty of chances to acquire all the skills necessary to thoroughly enjoy your experience in marching band. Think of your first experience in any new skill, even as far back as learning to read. Repetition, practice, patience, and willingness to learn can help you in anything you try!
No. You are welcome and encouraged to, but for 10th-12th grade students Marching Band participation fulfills PE credit for the year you are involved, just like a sport.
The Color Guard is the auxiliary squad of the marching band and is open to all. Zero prior experience is required! Flags, rifles, costumes, and other props help tell the story of the band through the various visual elements! Seneca Color Guard has won 1st place at State Championship 5 years in a row!!
Double-reed players typically make a seasonal switch to a new instrument for marching. This is an exciting opportunity for pick up something new and our double reed musicians love their new found instrument as well. They will still play their primary instrument for auditions, during class, and during the entirety of the spring.
Generally, attendance at all rehearsals, games and performances is mandatory. It is expected that band will be a priority, so please consult the band calendar before scheduling other appointments. School Sports and other Seneca Activities are often flexible between Band and the activity if you are willing to communicate. If you do have a conflict with any band events, contact Mr. Barber via email as soon as you are aware. Early communication is key.
