(black puzzle piece in your Extension area in Chrome)

As an employee at LPSD, you have full control to add and remove any Chrome webstore extension. Students will only be able to add those extensions that have been approved by the Ed Tech and IT Departments. Please submit a Form (ask your admin) to request the addition of extensions to the 'For LPSD' section of the Chrome Web Store. We check for privacy issues on apps and extensions for the safety of the students.

LPSD Supported Screencasting Tools

Suggestion: Keep video length to manageable amounts for students to watch: 5 - 20 min segments

1. Loom - #1 choice in LPSD for recording your screen or using your webcam. Videos can be edited on this site. Videos are stored in the cloud and can be shared quickly via a link. Sign up for a free educator PRO account!

2. Screencastify - a good product for very short screencasts or webcam access.

3. SMART Recorder - a good product, but you have to upload your video to Google Drive and then share with others

4. Use your phone or tablet! You likely have some editing capability (Camera app, iMovie etc) and can share your video through your Google Drive account.

LOOM

EXCELLENT PRODUCT! Use this with your webcam to read a story to your students, screencast a math lesson using SMART Notebook, direct students through a website or online activity...

Free Pro version for students and educators.

  1. Sign up for a free pro account

  2. Share video creations via Google Classroom, email or another platform such as SeeSaw OR provide students with a web link to the video

  3. Add Loom for Chrome from the Chrome Web Store for a quick recording

  4. Editing available

  5. Can record your screen, with or without the webcam

  6. No downloading of videos necessary but you can archive your videos to your Google Drive (not a bad idea...)

  7. There are options to store your videos in folders so you can stay organized as your video library grows

  8. There are privacy settings options such as: add a password, only viewed by invite, only viewed by those with the link

  9. You can embed a link to another website or video within your Loom video - Call-to-action (see video below)

  10. You can insert a picture (jpeg) as your start screen for the video - makes your video stand out on your website.

To use the Drawing Tool and Mouse Click Highlight, you must download the Zoom desktop app

TIP: Hey Loomers! Please rename your videos with titles understood by students! If not, they are only named by date and difficult to know the content without watching them.

Loom error - if you are getting a Java script error with the installed desktop version of Loom, go to the Control Panel on your computer: >Add or remove programs >Remove Loom and then re-install it.

The free version has limited video length of 5 minutes. This is great for short student projects. Flipgrid is another great student video recording application as is Book Creator.

  2. Videos will be housed in a Screencastify folder in Google Drive

  3. Videos can be shared directly with your Google Classrooms.

SMART NOTEBOOK RECORDER

SMART Recorder

LPSD recommends using Loom over the SMART Recorder

Staff only: This application will allow you to record your screen including any lessons you present in SMART Notebook (ie math lesson, or marking up a document or diagram).

The SMART Recorder is part of SMART Notebook 17 and newer versions.

Please contact the LPSD Ed Tech Consultant regarding your licence for SMART Notebook, help getting it and using the program as well as the student accessible, online version called LUMIO,

Sample Lesson - using Loom to record a lesson in SMART Notebook

Tips:

  • have graphics and slides ready so your audience is not watching you search

  • divide the content into shorter clips

  • store in a labelled folder in Loom

  • carefully title videos in your series for students to watch in order

  • use the eraser to uncover words or graphics OR use a box to cover/hide the graphic until you are ready OR pause your recording to move objects in SMART Notebook

  • distribute video via Google Classroom, email or Google Site
