How will my new student be supported?
At our DMS, we work hard to make sure new students feel welcomed, supported, and connected from the moment they arrive. One of the ways we do this is through our New Student Breakfast, held twice a year—once in the fall and again in the spring. Students get a personal invitation, and take part in a short presentation that introduces them to key staff, school info, and helpful tips for getting started. We also have a New Student Website with resources they can check out any time, like who to contact for help, what to expect, and answers to common questions.
Counselors also schedule check-ins with new students regularly—on their first day, second day, end of the first week, and end of the second week, and we keep the support going longer if needed. We also offer a small group program with approximately six sessions. These groups focus on building connections, managing change, and helping students feel confident in their new environment. Sessions are flexible and offered throughout the year depending on how many new students enroll.
To keep improving what we offer, we also host Focus Groups at mid-year and at the end of the year to hear directly from new students about what’s working and what we can do better. Altogether, these supports help new students feel like part of the school community right away. If there is ever anything more we can do to support your student, please do not hesitate to reach out!
